Writer's Strike Update: Nikki Finke Reports that Days of Our Lives Writing Team May Be Getting Jobs Back?

This just in! Nikki Finke of Deadline Hollywood Daily fame is reporting the following from the WGA meeting today in New York.

"Melissa Salmons said, 'For years, I have lived in fear of that DVD formula, that it would be with me for my life. Now we have a deal that have movement in it.' (Later on, she told a daytime writer that the staff of Days of Our Lives, who had all been fired last week, were getting their jobs back. And that a striking writer, if fired, had to be replaced by a striking writer. Not a scab, and not a fi-core member."

So what does this mean? To be honest I'm not sure. As I understand it (and I could be wrong) TV networks and shows such as Days of Our Lives can't fire striking writers during the course of a strike without suffering the consequences. Obviously only time will tell what those consequences may be.

Oh that is soooooooooo weird! But it makes sense really. In any labor union, there are rules to abide by wether it be in tv, government, hospitals, postal services, etc. In particilar your boss can't up and fire you during a strike just because you're on strike...that's illegal and perhaps that is why NBC has to rehire them now. However NBC could fire the writing team once the strike is over and they are officially back at work...that would make the network free to do anything they want with the writing staff as they would have no strike protection guarding them. However the issue should be made that they shouldn't just be able to fire anyone without due cause!

God I hope they get their jobs back, I can't stand anymore of this God awful dialogue such as:

Chelsea: And as far as grandfathers go, you're okay.
Sami: ...but it was just a confusing mess. And I was really confused and messed up because of it.

If you want to be impressed with Dena Higley, just take a look at how she can destroy a show (*cough*OLTL*cough*) in no time at all!

Wait a sec! Didn't Thom Racina state in the podcast that he was fired from a soap after the writers strike in favor of the scab writers?

As I understand it, you can't fire a writer during a strike without reprecussions BUT once the strike is over and the writer has returned there is nothing really stopping the networks from firing a writer. The Days writers were fired during the strike which gives them more rights than say Thom who was fired post strike. If you're fired post strike its really no different than when OLTL fired Dena or AMC fired McTavish. The issue is being fired during a strike.
