DC #280: Top 10 Ways to Improve General Hospital

I haven't heard it yet, but oh boy, here we go!

I finally have free time to post here, ya. Of course I'm really weary about hearing this one. I'm a fan of GH. I'm a fan of Sonny. I know the writing for him is so so bad. I just don't want to hear everybody say he should get killed. Ugh, you know who needs a break, Saint Jason of the brain damaged. Everybody worships the ground Jason walks on, like he's the second coming of Christ. Extras even love him and come to his aide, give me a break. I'm waiting for the episode where Jason picks up a paper clip and decides to make it a god and everybody should pray to it. I'm sure those who won't follow will be killed just by the shrill voice of the back stabbing Carly #4. In fact, Carly, LuLu and Johnny (I'm so tired of hearing all the girls say he's hot, ugh) with Jason should be dropped into a acid. I could go on and on, lol. The hero of this show should be Lucky, he's Luke and Laura''s son for heavens sake.

Well, I have no love for Jason either, not compared to Sonny nor on his own. I haven't called for anyones death, per sey; (recently) and don't even advocate the total cessation of the mob storylines, but I advocate balance, a return to the hospital and the core families and their interpersonal relationships. While I'd love to have Lucky more front and center, he shouldn't be the center of the show either: unless he becomes a nurse or a doctor, of course, because it SHOULD be all about the HOSPITAL.

I know people say it should be about the hospital but i started watching GH in 1993 and I don't recall the hospital being all that central to the story.

I want to watch GH again, but Guza is still writing the show and I am vacating the show until a miracle is happening and Guza and Co out of GH and get new writers to make me watch again.

Your right. Why they made Lucky a cop is beyond me. Maybe it's a blessing. I mean with this current writting, had they made Lucky a doctor, he would of been the worst one. I don't hate Guza as much as others, in fact I like his work when done right. When Guza's at his game, he's the top. But I really think Guza needs to leave GH, we need someone who knows the show, like on OLTL.

Lighten Matt Hunter up a bit. I am a huge Jason Cook fan, and am glad he's on Gh with Kirsten, but he's not attracting any new fans by having his character be such a jerk. I hope Matt & Maxie are given a realistic shot at a great romance, they seem to be headed there so I hope it doesn't go downhill like the rest of Maxie's relationships.

Is it wrong for me to have like the show better during the strike?

Loved the podcast Luke and you are right we need a writer who loves soaps and knows the history of the show ,I think Jenny E was married to Ned and Tracey find out that Jenny had a baby when she was 16 yrs old and Jenny divorced N ed and married Tracey`s ex husband Paul who is also Dillon`s Dad and Jenny and Paul have a daughter what if that gril is Ned`s not Paul `s ,But they would have to bring back Ned , Dillon, and Brooklyn .And yes the romance is gone from the show how can I invest in a couple for only 6 to 9 mos that`s not long enough for me .

I wish you guys had talked about the portrayal of women on GH. I think the show's misogynistic tone is a major problem. The women are constantly victimized, become man and/or baby obsessed at one point or another, get involved with psychos, and are written as "sluts" or shrieking nagging shrews, and in general are treated like second class citizens. It's only the talent of the actresses that keep any of the female characters likeable. Even if it's not in the writing, the actresses try to instill their characters with warmth, intelligence, humanity. Unfortunately Guza writes the show as a machismo fantasy, instead of writing a show that would appeal to women (you know, the core audience).

...And here we go

I believe we recorded for close to 2 hours and I know we kept trying to make sure we covered everything. I know we discussed how women are portrayed on the GNO podcast.

I'm sure we could have gone on for hours longer but then poor luke would have to edit all that. LOL!

Finally listened to this and agree with most of what was said. I've got a question, how long do you have to be on a show to be considered a vet? For example Sonny, Jason, and even Jax have been on 10+ years, aren't they vets yeat? I think the character of Carly is a vet, just not the actress, since that role has been recast four times.

Simple LESS MOB, MORE LOVE & FAMILY ,We need a s/l that entwins Liason & the Q's and that won't be hard to do once Jake's paternity is outted. What is GH waiting for UNSTALL LIASON and get moving on their story. Out Jake's paternity while he's still a baby. Monica needs to spend time with her GRANDBABY (hint hint BABY) Edward needs his great grandson and he's not getting any younger.. HELLO WRITERS

And I agree with one of the posters above the show was more enjoyable during the writers strike.

Luke, love the idea of Chandra Wilson being on GH. Would have been nice to see her butt heads with Dr. Ford, but that won't happen now.
How about having her be related to Epiphany and have her wind up in the hospital? That would be interesting. They could explore more of Epiphany's past and her grieving for Stan (which seems to be forgotten now).
I thought Jenny Eckhert got pregnant and had an abortion, but I could be mistaken.
Also, don't forget Jimmy Lee Holt - Edward's illegitamite kid. He'd have some grown kids by now. Fill up the Q mansion again. Start with Ned, Brooke Lynn (AL), and Dylan!
Dylan could make a documentary on the Qs or maybe a rockumentary with Ned.
Have L&B sign Eli Love...bring Juan back from his travels.
Have Liason move into the Q mansion!

Well excuse me. I was a little insulted by the manner you brought up my comment of bringing Courtney back. I was a huge Courtney fan and i loved her.

I despise Liz and Jason and disagree that fans want them together becasue if you look around ppl actually hate them. What they need to do is off Liz and Shrewlu like they did that god awful emily to make the show better.

Courtney fan4life: I was never a Courtney fan, but I think your idea is a good one because there's a lot of potential for her (since I'm sure she's still alive - somewhere )

They talked on the podcast about who has ties with other characters and who would be vital to integrating the cast, and if you think about it, Courtney would fit the bill. She's a Corinthos, she was married to Jax, she has a child with Nik (which ties her to the Cassadines), she's Jason's ex (and is AJ's ex - both of which ties her to the Qs), she was Carly's best friend/only female friend, and she's been Liz's nemesis in the past... So really, there's a lot they could do with Courtney if they ever brought her back.

I agree w the podcasters, even though it always raised my blood pressure, the rivalry betw the Sam and Liz fans was and is passionate and would bring people in...Lusam v Liason would be fun to watch, hell even Carly v Liz have always been fun to watch.

I dont agree that we need to go back to some of the things the podcasters about improving the show. Some of that stuff is frankly old people are wishing for some things that aint never coming back. Sound tracks dont need to be changed, I dont need stunts what I need is good storyline and building romances.

The show does not need to be 1 hour.

I dont need back stage stuff but I do think they podcasters are right that they need to do some things differently. Again bring back the romance which I know Guza hates. But you're a soap writer; romance is the cornerstone of soaps. Yes, respect the genre and stop trying to be GH "un-soap".

lady of the lake, while I wasn't a fan of your comments about Jason, since he's the best thing since butta. I realize that everyone has their opinions, but I can however agree with you on Johnny. I'm not a fan, in fact I wanted Lulu with Logan, and well now he's dead....this of course was before he went all psycho on her a$$.

Hire a writer who has not failed at every job they have ever had (IE no recycled from multiple soap writers IE no Dena Higly or JPF or McTavish) and give them six months to tell their stories they way they want to tell them.

Sure I'd love to see the vets more. I'd like less insta love and more relationship building. I'd like the end of Chan.

But none of that is going to be good if good writers are micromanaged within an inch of their lives.

Not at all sparky, the scabs were alot better....I almost wish there were another strike, if it weren't for the fact that primetime would be messed with too.

The character isn't considered a vet, the actor is.

Courtney fan I am a liason lover......I've only been on this board for a short time and in that short time I've run across maybe 2 or 3 ppl that don't want liason together. I was a huge Courtney fan as well and I loved her and Jase together but Court has passed on and Jase and Liz have a chance to be together again......if ever the writers will get their heads outta their rears.

Oh aunti2egl, there are plenty of people who visit this site that don't want Liason together, they're just not necessarily posting about it... This site happens to be a very pro-Liason place, and there's nothing wrong with that at all, but sometimes people feel intimidated to post anything that goes against the grain, so to speak.

LOVED the podcast. I started watching GH in '93, so I'm use to the mob. However, back then there was balance. The mob stuff didn't take up 95% of the show. Ok, I can't get into GH(circa '93-'97)...nostalgia is something else. LOL!!!
Oh, I was a huge fan of Sonny(1. but now I could care less. However, I have always loved Jason. I have only been mad at him once......JnR Part2, the Carly(1. years. Other than that, he has been on his best behavior.

aunti2egl, I know that the actors are what make vets, I wanna know how long they have to be on the show before fans consider them vets. Does it have to be over 20 years. I mean, I was thinking about how many of the cast now have been on for 10 years or more. Jax, Sonny, Jason, Elizabeth, Nikolas, and Alexis, aren't they vets yet? I know it's a stupid question but Maurice Benard has been on the show for 15 years, I consider him a vet and all the others that have been on 10 years or more.

Jenny, great minds think alike. Expect for some of the Jason stuff you sound just like me. I too started watching GH in 1993.

I'm listening to the podcast and I just can't respond to it because, seriously, I'd be putting up posts for the whole month of August about what this show needs. I'm just gonna put the gun down and walk away slowly.
