Jammylove: I watched your Cyrus and Marina vid - AWESOME!!
thanks !
Oh dear. What did I start? Being knee deep in someone's behind means your going after them with a vengeance. Your not gonna stop until you do what needs to be done. I guess it's one of those Southern things that I don't realize is one until I say it. But besides that GREAT PODCAST Y'ALL!! Thanks for the shout out!
Another outstanding podcast! I agree with vast majority of all of your opinions about how to improve GL. The most interesting thing was how the majority of folk have the idea that Cassie should get knee deep in the behinds of the citizens of Springfield in one form or another! (Sorry, could not resist!)
Thanks for the multiple shout outs, guys. If I had known that posts would have been read, I wouldn't have composed the sequel to War & Peace! LOL
[On a personal note, it tickles me to no end that Luke seems to get discombobulated by my screen name every single time. So far, it's been D-S-Sisko, D-Sisko, S-Sisko and something unintelligible. LOL If this helps, "DS9" is the excepted abbreviation for "Star Trek: Deep Space Nine" (the greatest of all the Treks) and "Sisko" refers to the character of Captain Benjamin Lafayette Sisko, commander of the space station, captain of the USS Defiant, and religious emissary of the Bajoran religion. Hence, "DS9Sisko". Now that I've explained it, that probably says more about my ego than I intended! LOL]
I agree you can write for a married couple, for example: Josh or Reva can work late and the other fights about it, Watch (Dallas..)GL/AMC/ATWT/GH/B&B/Y&R Fans!!!!!!!!!
Luke, I respect you opinions, so sorry about this. All I have to say to your (more than once) comments about the dialog of soaps being more like the Gilmore Girls, noooooooooooooooo. Why does everyone love that show, ugh. I'd stop watching soaps if they did that, seriously.
lol....you are welcome to disagree with me, it's only my opinion, TPTB will take it or leave it. As for Gilmore Girls. The reason people love it is because it had intelligent, snappy, fast paced and emotionally enticing dialogue. I would kill to have that kind of writing in soaps today instead of the same thing over and over and over day after day after day.
I don't want soap dialogue to go Gilmore's either. Those women made me want to chunk a brick at my TV with all that incessant, mindless chatter! Give me Brothers and Sisters on daytime anyday!
I guess it's all a matter of what type of dialogue one enjoys huh. I love Brothers and Sisters but the dialoge on Gilmore Girls kept me as a viewer on my toes. I love how they wove pop culture and obscure references into their banter. Yes, Brothers and Sisters is awesome at drama but I also believe that soaps should have comedy or dramady in them and imo few shows with drama at its core added comedy/dramady into it's story as well as Gilmore Girls did, in recent years.
Brothers and Sisters has tons of comedy, realistic comedy that shows how people actually talk to their loved ones. Nobody really talks like those Gilmore GIrls. Lorelai was the worse, if my mom was that silly I would trap her in a sack with a racoon!
Every time I would watch the Girlmore Girls. My mother always had the same comment "Who talks like that?" followed by "Is there something else on?".

See that's how I felt! Dawson's Creek started that whole trend of teens speaking like 40-year-olds with ph. D's, and Gilmore's took it to the umpteenth power. It was a cute show, but it shouldn't be a template for soaps. First of all it wasn't scandalous enough. All that earnest, homespun goodness is enough to make me vomit. The only soap-worthy characters were te rich boyfriend (for the little girl) and that grandma, now she was a hoot!
Well, I watched most of the Gilmore Girls when it was on, I know I hated it but watched it with a good friend. In turn she would watch something I loved and she hated, like endless reruns of Babylon 5. Those girls drove me insane , I wanted to claw my eyes out. Luke, since you were a fan, I wonder what you thught about the last two seasons? They to me were the worst. Since my friend was such a fan, I saw her dissapointment and felt for her. Who hasn't been in those shoes with their favorite shows.
I never said anything about using the characters, I've always maintained that the soap characters need better dialogue. I think soaps could use a healthy dose of GG styled dialogue and it could be very dramatic imo.
Gilmore Girls had the same kind of dialogue rhythm to it as a lot of classic comedies (His Girl Friday, My Man Godfrey) w/ lots of pop culture references thrown in, which I loved. But it's definitely a love it/hate it kind of thing. There were a lot of things I didn't like about the show (quirky and eccentric gets old REALLY fast), but I loved the dialogue. No one talks like that, but then again no one talks like Aaron Sorkin characters, David Mamet characters, DAYS Robo-John, etc
Luke after my list i mean to say Morean... Sorry about that.
GL/AMC/ATWT/GH/B&B/Y&R Fans!!!!!!!!!
Oh come on folks.....no one talks like people do in soaps in real life either, with giant pauses....talking to someone with their back turned to the person they are talking too...epic stares between dialogue or repeating themselves over and over and over day after day after day. If we talked like they do in soaps we'd be asking ourselves if we were entering the Matrix because everything would be deja'vu and we'd be seeing verbal black cats walking in front of us again and again.
Saying that GG dialogue wouldn't work in daytime because it isn't natural is the pot calling the kettle black when no one in real life talks like people in soaps do either.
No one is saying the way people talk on soaps currently is realistic either, but having everyone is Soap-land develop ADD like those women on Gilmore Girls isn't a ready solution either. Loreali needed to be a Ritalin!
Good lord, GL is so boring right now that we are debating Gilmore Girls instead?
Oh snap snowi.
Count me as a Gilmore Girls fan, who loved the dialogue, especially Lorelei's mother and those devastating Friday night dinners. Somewhat on topic (and maybe not), you know who I would LOVE to see write dialogue or produce Guiding Light in the vein of a prime time series?
My top 3 picks would be:
Matthew Weiner of Mad Men.
Ronald D. Moore of Battlestar Galactica.
Greg Berlanti of Brothers and Sisters.
Everyone makes a great point, especially you snowi. I think in some cases the snappy dialogue would work. The characters of Ric and Alexis on GH would have been perfect for that, kind of like Grant and Russell or Tracy and Hepburn. But it would need to be limited to only a few characters. Each character should have a different style, not completely outrageous but not the sameness we sometimes see. No one needs every character to be Lorelai or Joey or God help us, Dawson.
Oh heaven help us if every soap character had Dawson's dialogue...he did more staring than they do in soaps. lol
Babies whined less than Dawson. I'm a strictly Pacey woman!
what if Gl talked like they did in Gossip Girl? " DAMN THAT MOTHER CHUCKER !"
Yes, I need someone to get knee-deep someone's ass in Springfield! That's good soap. It's okay, that you don't use much slang, Luke. Everyone has a little ghetto in them, especially when you're mad.
***///Living In The World Of Soaps Since 1985\\\***
Best, not everybody has a little ghetto in them. I had a friend in college from Iowa whose car was dented by a clueless driver. My friend, furious as hell, hollared, "That's just so unfair! I just got this damned car!" LOL
I don't have any ghetto in me, but I'm an old Southern gentleman who believes in ass whuppin's and a few well placed cuss words. LOL
Speaking of ghetto, the most notorious and authentically ghetto scene in daytime history was the fight between Doreen & Maya on Generations. I posted the link in a thread a few weeks ago, but here it is for your pleasure if you missed it the first time:

DS9Sisko, I posted a link to that catfight a few months ago! It's a CLASSIC!!! LOL
