Why you don't kill off Myrtle
By Luke Kerr on August 22, 2008
This, as Daytime Confidential reader Season1217 so aptly put it, is why you don't kill off Eileen Herlie's Myrtle Fargate.
What is so amazing to watch, in this scene, is how much depth and history Julia Barr, Susan Lucci, Eva La Rue, Eileen Herlie, Jill Larson, Alicia Minshew and Eden Riegel bring to their characters. When you compare this clip (which can't be more than 2-3 years old) to today's All My Children, the disrepair of today's All My Children is so glaring you also have to wear sunglasses to shield your eyes. Ironically, back then we thought All My Children had problems. What is it they say about hindsight?

Name one person on this show right now that could have gotten all those women to straighten up and fly right?! Okay, Angie could. But who else?

I agree with you season1217! Myrtle is like the only sane family member out of a family of nuts. She's not afraid to tell it like it is, and with dignity also. She is like one of those "last of the "old" Hollywood women". Don't kill Myrtle off!!!

I remember this scene when it first aired and thinking this is why I watch daytime. Please bring back Julia Barr!!!!!!!

I don't see much depth from Kendall -- never have since the recast. It's like playing one of these things is not like the other including her in that clip. lol Of course, it seems the Zendall show might be tempered some with Pratt but we'll see. I loved Maria's comments. Myrtle is the matriarch of this show and always will be -- killing her off is disgusting, unless the actress feels she wants to do that. It's like killing off Opal or Palmer -- so what does that tell us? Let's kill the senior citizens of PV who are past the age of constant plastic surgery?
I can't figure out WHY AMC refuses to watch Y&R and how they honor their older characters. We have two Carey Hos in the wings for that. Let's get rid of them -- easy peasy. If I have to see one more JR/KWAK mutual love scene, I'm going to write a letter myself. Stop with that nonsense, unless it's leading to an affair with her SIL (I can barely type that). I wouldn't put it past either of them. The Carey clan was McTrash's doing and she's gone now -- let's start getting rid of the foul trash she created on this show and bring AMC back to its glory again.

That was proof that AMC needs to move heaven and earth to get back Julia Barr as Brooke! Erica and Brooke's rivalry is a daytime staple, and the show just isn't the same without her.

Does anyone have a clue how Eileen Herilie might feel about this?
Like James Mitchell (Palmer), Ms. Herilie is is getting way up in years and her appearances are more and more sporadic. While it is always a pleasure seeing Myrtle try to talk some sense into Pine Valley's craziest or her sweet flirtations (and friendships) with the hunks of the show, one feels the pangs of a beloved and feisty character and actress slipping into her twilight. Mitchell has more or less been in semi-retirement for some years now and Palmer is always offscreen doing business. The same could be done with Myrtle but also death does happen to older folk, you know.
If Myrtle has to pass on, I would rather it not be violently. And I would miss her terribly. Yet, if it should be so, I think Myrtle would be the kind of character to go out with a bang, not a whimper. If AMC can handle the character's passing with the same kind of depth and emotion that Days did with the character of Shawn Brady given the number of lives she touched then I can live with that.

This is why I removed AMC from my Tivo season pass. I thought it would be a lot harder to part with the show (watching for 10+ years now), but I'm three weeks in and not missing it at all. So sad.
