A Short Drop Off A Long Cliff

The demise of Greenlee "The Wedding Bride Biker Chick" Smythe (Rebecca Budig) on All My Children has inspired some great reaction from Fancast's Sara Bibel and Serial Drama's Mallory. Be sure to check out both of their columns.

Sara Bibel: Literal Cliffhangers

Rebecca Budig told the show months ago that she planned to leave at the end of her contract. Yet her final scenes seemed like a silly attempt to land another clip from the show on The Soup. The shot of Greenlee, still in her wedding dress, riding a motorcycle over a cliff seemed like a parody of soap operas. It was also illogical.

Mallory at Serial Drama: Confrontations & Contrivance

In the wake of Greenlee diving off of a cliff, I am left with several questions (Much like the latest non-sweeps non-crisis on General Hospital has me so confused that I can't finish a question without interrupting myself with a new one, I spend most of AMC boggled. What does it say about me that I can't follow soap opera plots? Nothing good, that's for sure):

Why, when the writers need to write someone in Greenlee's circle off the show do they automatically think FALL OFF OF A CLIFF? Leo, Vanessa, Ryan (regrettably, that one didn't take) and now Greenlee herself. It's bizarre, lazy, unrealistic and...yeah, completely up AMC's alley.

I think Sara got it right - it was more like a parody. They had to have been purposely trying to make it "funny" and absurdly "ironic" - I giggled, I admit it! But it's still a lousy way to send off a character that many people loved. Shame on them! And shame on me for giggling!

btw Luke, I've been thinking of Greenlee's death as a long motorcycle ride off a short cliff, lol

When it was first mentioned that Greenlee would fall off a cliff and be presumed dead I liked the idea. I thought it was going to be done similar to when Leo died and that way the audience would be left with the feeling that somehow Leo and Greenlee were back together, whether, in the after life or together on a deserted island somewhere. But to have her fall off a cliff that conjures up the memories of a horrible s/l that I thought I had gotten rid of with electroshock therapy is unforgivable!

Leo and Vanseea weren`t the only two people to fall off that same cliff so do Hannah N. can the writers like all of you said think of a better way to send the character of Greenlee out of Pine Valley and not kill her off like he has done with both Josh and DI ,How many characters does Pratt want to kill off.

IMO the writers put the least thought in how they would kill off Greenlee. Once they knew RB was leaving they decided to use her departure as a plot device to set-up a long term storyline of Ryan versus Zach. Seeing her on that motorcycle with her vail flying in the wind was hysterical, but I doubt AMC was going for that. Also, if this was supposed to make us more sympathetic to Ryan, it didn't work (at least for me). Unfortunately the only thing we are getting from Greenlee's death so far is Cameron Mathison overacting. He is chewing up so much scenery that it is making his eyes bug out more than usual!

Simply put it was craptastic minus the "tastic"

Okay, I thought it was the funniest thing I've seen in years on soaps. But if it were meant to be dramatic, well...can't wait to see The Soup! LMAO

It definitely had me tuning in... just so I could see that hot mess. BUT had I not, I wouldn't have seen Alicia and how great she has been on her return. It's a cheesy and stupid way to write out Greens but then again with all the shenanigans surrounding her return I suppose it's just par for the course.

I love Rebecca, but Greenlee's return was a bust and Rebecca knows it and split why she can. I wish her success and hope that soap will pick her up.

Every time I saw that ad for Greenlee flying over that cliff...I just had to yell "Wheeeeeeee!!!!"

Seriously...why not just have had her get her wedding gown all tangled in that motorcycle...that could have been fatal, too. I mean seriously, who in their right mind wouldn't at least have changed into something a bit more motorcycle safe??

How stupid do these writers think their viewers ARE?? Or maybe the question is...how stupid are THEY??

Such a bad bad sendoff......the whole Zach sperm/lesbian or bi? kiss/Ry-Ry not knowing the difference between kissing and intercourse/blabbing shit that was none of his damn business in the first place storyline just makes no sense and is so out of character for most of them....ARGH....

Shame on such lazy writers. Same in disrespecting the characters, actors and the fans. Boooooo.

(Sorry. rant off)

I loved the character of Greenlee BEFORE she came back last year, and i kinda felt like that sendoff was kinda just thrown together. The best return for me so far was kendall's return from her latest coma. Alicia's ice queen acting is almost giving me chills and im surprised Reese hasn't fled PV screaming. At least that's one good thing about rebecca leaving, is that Kendall is on fire

What an ENORMOUS waste of a very talented actress! Rebecca Budig was WAY more deserving then the crap that was given to her this past year. But that horrendously STUPID ending was SO beneath her that it's laughable! She's too good for this ridiculous soap anyway. I hope she makes it big in primetime, like she should. I suspect that it won't take long. And then this last year on AMC will only be a distant memory for her. (If TIIC would have given her DECENT material, like she had the first 3 years she was on the soap, she would now be one of the Emmy nominees that were just announced!) What a rip-off, not only for Rebecca, but for her fans as well! At least it's a comfort to know that the Daytime Emmys have become nothing but a BIG JOKE! None of the major networks even wanted to carry them this year! That speaks volumes in my book. Wink
