DC #379: Top 5 Kidnappings

Ryan Harrison was one of my favorite characters ever. When he died, I really couldn't watch Another World anymore. I loved loved LOVED Ryan/Vicky. One of my favorite soap couples.

I remember the Justine Kirkland storyline. This made me miss Another World. I also recall Dack Rambo's charismatic Grant, whom I liked, and Mark Pinter's relentlessly evil, self-serving Grant. I blocked this out of my mind, I think due to hating the death of such a beloved character, but didn't Grant kill Ryan by shooting him? It's been so long.

Yes, Grant did kill Ryan. Also, Carly in the panic room is why I've never been able to get behind Ric. That was just so disturbing.

Wow, I can't believe you listed Katherine's first kidnapping on Y&R as one of the best. Jeanne Coopers dual role was the only reason that story kind of worked the first time. Since the re-introduction of Clint I think a lot of people would agree that the original was not one of Bill Bells best.

I would like to add some other kidnappings on Y&R that were far superior to this one. Here they are in no particular order.

1) Lisa kidnaps Brad and locks him in a cage.
2) Sheila's first kidnapping of Lauren when Lauren discovered Sheila switched babies and the cabin burned down.
3) Jill Abbott discovers Sven shot her as he takes her to a hideaway place and locks her in a freezer to die.

Great podcast. It is good to have the Top 5 Episodes return. My suggestion for a future episode: the Top 5 Head-Writers of the past 30 years AND their Top Storylines. This may require some deep research, but it could prove to be a treat for the fans.

Uh oh, you just lost Luke!

I remember the first kidnap story I watched and that was when Grant Putnam kidnapped Anna on GH. He originally intended to kidnap Robin and almost got her, but Anna came home and caught him. Robin got away but Grant took Anna instead, locked her up a cage in his basement and had her guarded by a dog. Robin was traumatized by the incident (her "grandmother" Philomena died trying to protect her from Grant) and lay mute in hospital. Anna stuck a fork in Grant's hand and he got sick and ended up in hospital too. Duke, who had been trying to get out of the mob, enlisted the help of the Jerome family with locating Anna. Robert came back to town as well and teamed up with Sean. It dragged on for weeks and finally came to an end when Grant took Anna up into the mountains where she was finally rescued.

One of the most compelling kidnapping plots for me was Viki Carpenter locking Dorian in the secret room in the 90s on OLTL.

Oakdale-fan, I barely remember that but the parts I do remember were so good and sweet. Sweet I say because Duke was willing to give up the mob life, a life he only knew in order for a woman and her child. That's when GH was good and what they should do now, instead of having this confliction that Sonny and Jason claim to have.

I'm curious about the comment that Deidre Hall did not get along with Crystal Chappell and that is why Chappell left Days in 93. Did Hall have that much say in who works at Days? Is this a backstage rumour?

I thought it was because Peter Reckell left and Robert Kelker-Kelly took over the role of Bo, and that changed the pairing. Plus they had 6 or 7 different head writers before Reilly took over and decided to get rid of Jack, Carly and Lawrence and create the character of Billy Read to pair up with Kelker-Kelly's Bo.

I always thought it was head writer Reilly that was to blame.

No it was Deidre Hall. She and Crystal butted heads big time. Chappell has talked about it in interviews and of course the tabloids were all over it back then. Hall and Chappell got on about as well as Susan Lucci and Sarah Michelle Gellar.

I absolutely love you Jillian, but Jamey's right! Sonny and Carly 2.0 was the best! The panic room story had me so riveted! I like Liz now, but she drove me nuts during that storyline!

Carly be buried alive is one of my favorites, also when Zander kidnapped Emily, when they first met and fell for each other. Lucky's kidnapping, great story telling.

I also miss the prime time movies that all soaps use to do. The OLTL special was so good, all the Days and GH primetime specials. Especially GH and Days, they would film those specials in film quality and they would alwasy be the number show on those nights they aired. Especially GH, they use to have one, two a year. Those days are over.

Loved Chloe! Her death was good, Stefan broke my heart during those scenes.

My Liason loving heart will always hold a special place for Elizabeth's 2002 kidnapping. Liz was taken and put in a crypt because of her association with Jason. Jason was frantic running all over PC and even cooperating with Tagert and the Quartermaines'! Eventually, Jason find's out she's in the crypt and as he runs up to the locked door he's screaming "Elizabeth." Then he smells gas and really starts to panic. I can still hear the way he was calling her name, there was so much desperation in his voice, it was soooo good! Of course right after that the writers senselessly split them up... sound familiar?

GossipGirl you are soo off my xmas list! Carly 2.0 sucked!!! This is how I catagorized ALL of them:

Carly #1: Loved to hate and felt bad for her when Sonny would go off.

Carly #2.HATED her and NEVER felt bad when Sonny would run all over her. Hell you'd root for him to do it agian!

Carly #3. Scary Carly as I like to call her. WTF was GH thinking!? Rooted for Sonny and Alcazar to make her into target practice.

Carly #4. Loved to hate her and eh, sometimes feel for her when Sonny gets in her grill sometimes I don't.

MeghannOC, I almost forgot about Liz's kidnapping. Not a Liason fan, was rooting for Zander and Liz, but that was a good storyline. Man, so many women have been kidnapped and inprisoned in crypts on GH. The last one was Emily right?

Throwing my hate in the ring here for my favorite Carly's. I loved Carly #1 and #2. Sarah Brown was the best Carly, period. I wasn't so sure of Tamara Braun until I meet her at a fan event and got to speak with her, she was awesome and very friendly. And I meet her more than once back in my fan event days, always so nice. I loved her verson of Carly until she fell for Alcazar. I'm sorry he helped Ric keep you in the panic room so he could sell drugs, you can't forgive Ric but you can forgive, have sex with and later marry Alcazar who dropped you flat when you went crazy. Carly #3, I don't hate her as much as others but marrying her off to Alczar was not endering to me, glad she went. I felt bad fot he actress when they fired her, so did MB who tried to help her keep her job in one way or the other, she came on to soon and didn't have the right kind of story line for her. Carly #4, ugh, loathe and I hope she dies in a fiery, painful manner. I don't think Laura Wright is all that, nor her portrayal of Carly. I mean does Sarah Brown ever look at her and go, I created Carly and she's become this?

Crystal Chapell is STILL the Shit! and Will always be THE SHIT. I wished she'd come back to ABC. I don't watch GL. I watched Days just for her and Louise Sorel!

I haven't listened to the show yet, but I had to comment. Jamey and I actually agree on something GH related! I LOVE Tamara Braun and she was the only Carly that I liked and actually rooted for a lot of the time (much to my surprise!)

Anywho loved the podcast and if I had to pick a Carly I would have to go w/the original and the best and that was Sarah Brown. Tamara was good, but like I said Sarah owned.

Jamey that is to funny. I love Tams and Sarah Brown, but Sarah Brown truly earned her three emmy. I mean many hair models have emmys, including, gasp, Vanessa Marcil. I do love VM, but Robin Christopher should of won.

Other hair models who won and emmy: Josh Duhamel, Jacob Young, David Lago, Jennifer Finnigan (gasp) and so forth and so forth. I'm sure Molly B. will ahve one soon.

Jennifer Finnigan is no hair model! She was the one who got me hook on the show that used to be B&B.

My favorite kidnapping storyline was when Alcazar kidnapped a pregnant Carly on GH and kept her on his yacht. The storyline was not the best but the chemistry between Tamara Braun and Ted King was undeniable. Who knew a game of backgammon could actually be sexy? CarLo fans know what I'm talking about!

And just to join in the debate, Carly 2.0 was my favorite Carly too. I love me some Tams!

Sarah was a great love to hate Carly, but in my opinion she can be a bit one note and overrated. I have now watched her in three soap roles, Carly, Julia on ATWT and now Claudia and they are the exact same character essentially. I had hoped Claudia would be different, from the promos, but she isn't. It's just a more chiseled Carly with dark hair. I bet she'll call Michael "Mister Man" when she sees him.

I agree with East West about J. Fig, one of the best young adult actresses daytime ever saw. I hated her at first, because I thought she wasn't pretty enough to play Brooke's daughter, but she won me over very quickly and broke my heart during the Brooke/Deacon/Bridget triangle.

2. Laura Wright - The best recast since Sarah Brown.
3. Tamar Braun - Just because she was a passable Carly. Can't give her much more than that.
4. Jennifer Bransford - doesn't even count.
