According to Dattilo,
They just decided to give my character a little break, and hopefully it won't last that long. They just called me and said, 'We're going to give you a couple months off, and you won't be working that much. We're gonna put you in rehab, and when you come out, we got this really great storyline for you.' I said, 'Ok, great,' but I haven't heard anything about it yet or any hints, so hopefully they won't forget because once you're out of that place, you're out of the loop.

While I like Datillo just fine, at this point, if Lucas was gone, I don't think I'd miss him...

Who cares about Lucas for real, Day's has a full canvas already and Lucas is surely not missed.

Get off my boy Lucas! See this is Days fans problem. They get secure in one alright storyline. Let the show get rid of everyone. Then when crap hits the fan again, go what happened?
This show has a full canvas of empty slates. A soap needs characters a)with history that spand more than a couple of years and b)with core families.
First, Lucas is a Horton. Remember those guys. I'm sure we might see them for a Christmas tree hanging before they disappear again.
Second, he's connected to every family in some way on that show. Very few characters can say that.
Plus, before the writers pussified him, he used to to be one of the smartest characters on the show. Always breaking up Sami's schemes while never getting caught in his.
He also used to be a true grey character. Not these fake grey characters they have now. Lucas would bend and break rules, but he wasn't evil. He could hero when need be.
The fans need to rally behind their vet actors/vet characters. Demand good stories not just filler mess. Lucas is funny, sexy, and a bad boy with a good heart (something this show is seriously lacking).
It boggles my mind that the writers can't find a good storyline for a character so intergrated in this shows history but still under-developed!

That seems to be the pattern they do with him. Maybe they are running out of money toward the end of the year and have to wait till next years budget kicks in.
Lucas still seems to have a fanbase with Sami even after all this time. He is one of the longer term characters now. Even though at times I have not enjoyed Lucas, I still hope he comes back. Depends on how they write him. Character has a lot of ties in town and potential.
Here's hoping for Brian.
