Celebrating 30 Years of James Stenbeck on ATWT
By Mike Jubinville on February 02, 2010

As the World Turns fans take note. Anthony Herrera made his first appearance as notorious villian James Stenbeck on February 1, 1980. Since then, Oakdale's baddest bad guy has lived and died more than his alotted nine lives.
There really isn't anything Stenbeck hasn't done over the past three decades— bribery, blackmail, kidnapping, murder, you name it. His favorite sport however, has been tormenting ex-wife Barbara (Colleen Zenk Pinter) and their son Paul (Roger Howarth).1981: Margo, James, Barbara
1982: James confronts Barbara about her relationship with Gunnar.
1986: Hello Barbara.
1987: The climatic explosion at Ruxton Hills.
1989: James meets Paul at a NY helipad.

While early on James was definitely Barbara's victimizer, in recent years the pair has been cut from the same cloth. Whenever they join forces in Oakdale, the results are usually disasterous for anyone who crosses their paths. Just ask Carly, Emily or the late Rose.
The current question regarding the Stenbeck mythology is whether or not Tom Pelphrey's character Mick Dante is really James reincarnated. With the series ending this fall, if Mick truly is who he says he is, will he morph back into Herrera's version before Nancy says good night? Who knows? Until then, sit back and watch some classic 80's video clips of one of daytime's best supervillians after the jump!

After seeing these clips I think Colleen Zenk Pinter is the one taking the youth serum...she's ageless. "Hello Barbara" is one of ATWT's most memorable scenes ever.

Back in the day ATWT and GL were the most watch soaps from 1958 to 1979 had an average of 10 million if you can believe that. It's so great to see them in their hay day once again, show the youngsters how soaps were done. I liked the dark haired Emily she was hot that was when I started watching it. Don't know if they were the first to have the younger old story line, Paul was real young going after Emily then. That was my favorite theme music too. After a bad day at school as soon as I walked in the door I herd that theme I knew I was home. Margo and Hal were great too thanks for the clips, what would we do without youtube.
Back when soaps had a budget. No cell phones, Laptops or Ipod crap. People had to wait by the phone for news. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ITn6byQ1LsI

James Stenbeck has always been one of my favorite villians and Anthony Herrera is a hero with how he has taken his illness to educate the masses. Kudos to both men.

One of my favorite lines ever from James was when Paul once said to him "Dad, I am going to kill you one day" and James said "That's my boy."
So sick.....I loved it.

Soaps were great then it should be required by the writers to go back a view these clips. Even men weren't ashamed to admit they watched them. That Emily sure was good looking back then. Too bad the CBS doesn't see the support ATWT has here.

this was great the 1986 episodes on are Doug Marland's writings, I loved Melanie's "Emily" that was the Emily that was suppose to resemble Susan. Andrew was my favorite "Paul", Love Hilliary my favorite Margo and did you see the original Meg!! What happened to P&G and the pride they took in their soaps....long gone now.

What a great time for ATWT. I remember Melanie's Emily, Andrew's Paul and Scott's Andy. What great young actors in well-rounded storylines. CZP is ageless. You see why I rave about her? Hot damn! Speaking of ageless, HB Smith ranks up there too.
I agree with Jamey. I need to stay off YouTube.
James' return in the Hello Barbara was a shock to viewers too. He was dead for three years. These stories took months to climax and involved every character in layered storylines, thanks to the late, great Marland. The Ruxton Hills clip is a great example. The filming, the music, the different things going on. Oh, how I miss that kind of storytelling. When Barbara realized Paul was in the house, she gave me chills. The scene was anchored by the burning house with her screaming in the background, complete with a fade to black. Great, great stuff.

Does anyone know what happen to that Emily? Current one is okay, but if I have to hear her cry or get upset, like running finger nails on a chalkboard. If they really care about soaps they would listen to the audience.

I saw Melanie Smith as Seinfeld's girlfriend Rachel for a few episodes in the 1990's. Currently, she is scheduled to appear in Martha Byrne's web series Gotham. Check the website www.gothamtheseries.com for information.

Trekkie Alert! My cuz just sent me this, Melanie Emily she was on DS9. He said that she was a hot alien babe. Type in anybody name and you probably find someone who has appeared on Star Trek like Marj Dusay - Alex Spaulding GL and the great Michael Zaslow - Roger Thorpe. He was the first to die on Star Trek, but he wasn't wearing that red shirt.

AH truly made James a classic bad guy -- his charisma made even the most ridiculous plots enjoyable. I was always excited when he was set to make a return to Oakdale. He knew how to shake things up. I really hope that "Mick" is yet another James spawn and not the real deal. He deserves to be one of the actors on the last episode. Thanks for remembering his anniversary!

Anthony Herrera was on an episode of The Incredible Hulk season 3 ep. 14 Titled Falling Angels. It's on hulu.com
He was a bad guy too. Think I got to work let me know. I love this stuff no CGI, great suspense and I love the music when he changes into the Hulk.

DenverDean....I agree that AH makes it work, 'cause we sure have watched enough of James the moustache twirler. He sizzles with CZP!
