Wishful Casting: Don Diamont as Kendall's First Love Anton on All My Children!

I have to say I am fairly shocked to hear that Don Diamont (Brad) is leaving The Young and the Restless. This has to be the first major flag on the play for the new Dream Team behind CBS's rejuvenated sudser.

Diamont has long been one of the biggest draws for the soap and fans were looking forward to finally seeing his relationship with Sharon (Sharon Case) explored. Then there is the fact that his adopted daughter Abby is rumored to be returning to town as a teenager soon, which would no doubt reignite Brad's bitterness toward Victor (Eric Braeden), whose sperm was famously stolen by Brad's ex-wife Ashley (Eileen Davidson) to produce the tyke. Sending Soap Stars To "Mars"

Set your DVRS soap nuts. All My Children's vacationing vixen Alicia Minshew, Guiding Light's newly-returned, hopeful soap-ssiah Grant Aleksander and As The World Turns diva du jour Elizabeth Hubbard will all be spoofing soap stars on tonight's episode of Life on Mars, when the crime drama's main character tune's in to watch his favorite show, according to Soap Opera Digest. Also look for Hubbard's former costar, Jennifer Ferrin (ex-Jenn, ATWT) to make a small appearance. Life on Mars airs on ABC. Check your local listings beeyouches and thanks ssjohn for the tip!

Inherit the Wind

Zach

I would be willing to bet that the most terrible words for daytime executives is "lapsed viewer." One might think that "cancellation" would be at the top of that list, but when a show goes off the air it is essentially a period at the end of sentence with everyone eventually moving on to something else. One also might think "lost viewers" might rank high, but the top brass is keenly aware that the television world has changed; viewers who have exited stage right have either different things to do or are far more selective with their viewing choices, two things that often go hand in hand.

As it turns out, the "lapsed viewer" is the elusive "independent" or "undecided" voters of the daytime world. Not unlike presidential hopefuls, network executives, producers and head writers stumble all over themselves to reel these people in to a new show or back into the fold of an old one. Their efforts vary from sincere to misguided to empty lip service depending on their audience or agenda. Continue Reading...

Kendall vs. Greenlee

Body:

Since Kendall is in a coma, while Alicia Minshew is taking a vacation and getting married, and Rebecca Budig is reported to be leaving, I thought it might be fun to see, after all these years, which of the two characters is the most popular.

Who is your favorite?

Minshew Takes Well Deserved Time Off

The sky is falling! The sky is falling! All My Children is actually giving Alicia Minshew a vacation! Hell has frozen over and pigs are flying! That's right folks, the day All My Children fans never believed would come has happened. Alicia is getting a vacation! Carolyn Hinsey is reporting that Minshew will take time off this fall to get married.

Personal Thought: You go Alicia! You've busted your ass for this show for the past few years, with barely a day off screen. All My Children has worked you to the bone and you deserve as stress free of a wedding as possible. Go get married, take a long honeymoon and come back to us the blushing bride, refreshed and ready to do what you do best, be Kendall. Best wishes and congratulations!

Remembering Myrtle

Another daytime legend has passed away. Yesterday news broke that Edge of Night and Another World alum Irene Dailey had died. Today, Pine Valley Bulletin has confirmed the passing of Eileen Herlie (Myrtle Fairgate, All My Children). She was 90.

Herlie joined AMC in 1976 as gutsy carny Myrtle, whose boarding house would prove home to generations of the show's young adult cast. Since the death of Erica Kane's mother Mona ( the late Frances Heflin), Myrtle has served as a surrogate mother to La Kane (Susan Lucci) and grandmother figure for her daughters Kendall (Alicia Minshew) and Bianca (Eden Riegel). She has also been a constant supporter of Kendall's husband Zach (Thorsten Kaye).

In a surprise plot twist and history re-write a few years back, we learned Myrtle also had a daughter of her very own, Rae Cummings (Linda Dano) and a grandaughter, Skye (Robin Christopher), who had actually lived in Pine Valley alongside Myrtle for many years with neither the wiser. Can Canary and Lucci Save All My Children?

A lack of direction, sinking ratings, storyline monopolization by a few select characters, fan uproar over the undoing of iconic storylines and viewer apathy plague All My Children. As Daytime Confidential's own Regan pointed out on a recent podcast "nothing should scare a show more than viewer indifference." Now Charles Pratt has the thankless job of trying to save a ship with cannonball sized holes in its bow. It isn't going to be the easiest of jobs.

Contract negotiations
between ABC and Alicia Minshew haven't gone well. Rumors that Rebecca Budig is taking the out in her contract have picked up steam. Lightening hasn't struck twice between Ricky Paull Goldin and Beth Ehlers' characters, though separately both characters have potential. The "Fusion Girls" concept, once fresh with possibilities, is worn, tired and a glaring blight on the show, cannibalizing all unfortunate enough to fall in its path. The teen scene is schizophrenic at best. At least a half dozen pointless characters litter the show, while misdirected couplings abound.

So what can a new head writer do to save a sinking ship? Continue Reading...
