Sneak Peek: OLTL Pulls Out All The Stops For Starr X'D Lovers: The Musical!
By Jillian Bowe on May 12, 2010
It's that time of year again. Prom Night is upon the denizens of Llanview, PA, and excitement is bursting over, as one of the most anticipated events in a high schooler's life is set to play out over three, dramatic, explosive, melodic, "Starr X'd" episodes of One Life to Live, beginning this Friday, May 14.
Yours truly was invited to the OLTL studio recently for a preview of Starr X'd Lovers: The Musical, and honies let me tell y'all, the gang over at OLTL has pulled out all the stops to give fans a smash, 3-day event. Several of the soap's major storylines climax during the Glee-esque eppys, including: Langston's (Brittany Underwood) creeping behind Markko's (Jason Tam) back with Ford (David Gregory); Cole (Brandon Buddy) being in the slammer for almost killing Starr's (Kristen Alderson) Pops; a "teenage" Jessica (Bree Williamson) gunning for Cristian (David Fumero), much to the chagrin of Brody (Mark Lawson) and Layla (Tika Sumpter) and Matthew (Eddie Alderson) finally getting the girl, except Danielle's (Kelley Missal) set her sights on another... An Open Letter to Frank Valentini
By J Bernard Jones on July 25, 2009
Dear Mr. Valentini,
I love One Life to Live, I really do. I haven't written much recently about your show on Daytime Confidential because there is so much going on at any given time that it can be hard to get a handle on which areas to focus. This is not a bad thing. You and your head writer Ron Carlivati have fashioned a fast moving, entertaining, and thoroughly engaging hour of daytime television that has catapulted it to the top of ABC's afternoon lineup. Bravo! There is far more good than bad on OLTL and in this case, no news can usually be good news. There is, however, one little thing that bugs me and it occurs to me that you — and only you — can fix it:
For the love of Harding Lemay, please put a merciful end to the disastrously choreographed fights between Gigi & Stacy! READ MORE
Christina Comes Home for Christmas
By J Bernard Jones on December 10, 2008
If you thought "love in the afternoon" was dead and gone, you've never seen the perennial holiday classic film 'Christina Comes Home for Christmas.'
What's that you say? You've never heard of it? Neither did I until Wednesday's episode of One Life to Live.
Before I explain, let me explain. I was planning to write about something completely different. In fact, the piece is nearly completed and I was in the middle of fine tuning it when I found myself swept away by what must be one of the most purely romantic episodes I've seen on daytime in at least ten years or more. Game On!
By J Bernard Jones on October 03, 2008
One Life to Live's "Who Wants to Be Shane Morasco's Father?" may have been a stunt but they were also episodes that managed to do right just about everything the 40th anniversary episodes got wrong.
In the bargain, they did everything the anniversary episodes did right just a few notches better. I know this kind of thing is not everyone's cup of tea, but I'll take this little detour the way Star Trek's Captain Picard likes his Earl Grey: Hot!
Borrowing the Who Wants to be a Millionaire? set, OLTL took what was rapidly becoming a hoary cliche — the near death out of body experience — and instantly breathed new life into it. While Viki's latest visit to "heaven" here and the shared Chris/Allison/Aaron Fellini-esque versions on As the World Turns were done very well, the staging and production of Rex's game show experience lent the entire sequence an air of immediacy that a cheesy in-house set would have been unable to accomplish. One Life to Live: Recommending to Friends?
By Luke Kerr on June 11, 2008
Anyone who has listened to the Daytime Confidential podcast or read this blog knows, we're big fans of Ron Carlivati and Frank Valentini's amazing transformation of One Life to Live.
We've enjoyed One Life to Live so much we recommended that Karen over at Wubs.net begin watching and after some convincing she finally did. Two days ago I received this as part of an email from Karen. "I tell you what, I've gotten a TON OF people to watch OLTL!"
Then much to Tina and my surprise our own spoiler guru Regan admitted to us on IM that she had finally started watching One Life to Live after hearing us talk about how much we are enjoying it.
Marone Macaroni, a long time Daytime Confidential listener recently commented on the Nelson Branco Weighs In On BE Boardroom Reveal that "I've just started watching OLTL, based on the consistently good comments it keeps getting on Daytime Confidential. So, I'm a new viewer, but IMO this show kicks butt."
UPDATE: ABC Daytime Confidential listener Jennie just posted this about One Life to Live in the TV Fan Online Forums.
"I want to thank the gang from the ABC podcast, you have all been talking about how great One Life to Live has been since Ron C. took over. And so after a 10 year break, I checked it out, right in time for Rex and Adriana's Wedding it was one of the best weddings in years. I added it to my PVR as a permanent recording. The last week has reminded me of the good old day's on General Hospital wasn't all about the mob. Dorian and the BE Takeover was some of the best writing and acting I have seen in years. General Hospital could take a lesson from OLTL corporate business can be even more exciting than the mob, bring back the Quartermaine's make them have to fight for their company and money! Thank-you all without your glowing praise I would have never seen this great show."
So here is my question. Have you been telling your soap watching or lapsed friends that they need to watch One Life to Live? If so, what has been there reaction after tuning in. Have the loved it, just enjoyed it, or hated it? Do you have a story you can share? We'd love to hear it.
