Kim Zimmer

Night of the Hunter

There are unforgettable performances in daytime television, many of them etched in fable or memory. Who among us who witnessed it the first time it aired will ever forget Judith Light during Karen Wolek's testimony in which she revealed she was a hooker on One Life To Live?  How about Kim Zimmer as Reva declaring herself the slut of Springfield or Beverlee McKinsey's Alexandra and her lethal evisceration of Roger at the country club on Guiding Light? Almost everyone involved in the aftermath of BJ's death on General Hospital was awesome. There was Mary Fickett's brilliance in the aftermath of Ruth's rape by Ray Gardner on All My Children. And who could forget Douglass Watson's titanic performance when Iris (Carmen Duncan) revealed to Mac she was behind the attempted takeover of Cory Publishing on Another World?  There are untold dozens of scenes, including quite a few in recent years that have been mesmerizing in their own right.

For my money, one of the most electric performances on daytime drama for all time was rendered by Academy Award winner Kim Hunter in her final episode on The Edge of Night as faded film star Nola Madison.  For your consideration, I have posted the meatiest scene — the episode's second act, featuring the confrontation between Nola and rival Margo — at the top of this entry, but the two brilliant scenes that follow are at the end of this entry with some additional background after the jump. Three's Company

Branson, Martinez, Lindstrom

Despite gloom and doom about the state of daytime in almost all of its aspects, fans have been treated to some good soap opera lately. The Young and the Restless is the Must See Soap right now. One Life to Live has regained it's glory and Guiding Light is steadily improving. Some of daytime's best actors are giving some of the performances of their lives. With that in mind, there are three performers new to their respective shows deserving of special mention who I think are doing a bang up job.

JR MARTINEZ (Brot Monroe, All My Children)

Introduced amid a publicity blitz, JR Martinez came aboard AMC with a fascinating, real life backstory: an Iraq War veteran seriously injured and disfigured by explosives, eventually becoming a noted inspirational speaker for and on behalf of veterans coping with their life altering injuries. His addition to AMC's canvas was purposeful and deliberate. The show wanted a real life injured vet to play Brot, former love of newcomer Taylor (Beth Ehlers).

AMC has received much justly deserved praise for casting Martinez, but make no mistake, this was as much a bit of stunt casting as it was groundbreaking decision. Continue Reading...

Kim Zimmer recently sat down with Capessa.com to discuss her breast cancer storyline on Guiding Light. Kim speaks about the storyline causing her to focus more on her personal healthcare.

The interview also includes two video messages featuring Kim, the breast cancer storyline, and the disease itself. Be sure to check out everything Kim has to say about this debilitating illness.

Jeff Branson, The New Shayne Lewis

We were wondering how long it would take for a show to scoop up Jeff Branson after he left All My Children. Now we know. Soap Opera Digest is reporting that Guiding Light has cast Branson as the new Shayne Lewis.

It should be interesting to see what kind of dynamic Branson's Shayne has with Kim Zimmer's Reva in comparison to Tom Pelphrey's Jonathon.

B&B Star To Direct "Light"

The Bold and the Beautiful star, Susan Flannery can add a director's credit to her already superb resume. According to TV Guide, the Emmy winner has already directed an episode for fellow network soap Guiding Light, featuring Emmy winner Kim Zimmer which will air on October 13. The episode incorporates a shocking development for Zimmer's alter ego Reva with regards to her pregnancy.

Says Flannery, “It's the wave of the future. I don't think B&B can necessarily do this. We're more of a romance novel. But, Guiding Light is a slice-of-life show, and Ellen (Wheeler, Executive Producer, GL) has taken everybody's idea of what soaps should be and blown it out of the sky," when speaking about the new production style that Guiding Light uses heavily, which was one of the reasons that Flannery decided to direct for GL.

Guiding Light: Kim Zimmer Interview

Kim Zimmer recently sat down with Michael Fairman to discuss all things Guiding Light.

In true Kim Zimmer fashion, she doesn't hold back on her thoughts. In the interview, Kim speaks about everything from her character development over the years to the shows new production style.

Here is an excerpt of what she had to say about that but be sure to check out the entire interview.

Michael: What are your feelings now about the current production module of “GL”? You were quite vocal about it, previously. You don’t see as many characters in a full episode anymore.

KIM: That is because of budget. They cannot afford to work people the way they used to work us. I still have real issues with the interiors.  Personally, because I am an outdoor person. I love being in Peapack, New Jersey, because we have so much room. I don’t necessarily like the interior shooting we do in Peapack. I still have major issues with the studio sets and with the lighting and the sound. I still have issues with why we don’t wear body mics while we are in Peapack outside.  It also limits the directors on how they can move the actors in that wonderful space we have out there.

Quote of the Week: "Oh Damn. It's Ginger Ale!"

Sometime I wonder if Kim Zimmer is a superhero, capable of single handedly pulling up Guiding Light by the bootstraps? The scenes where Reva and Josh walk down memory lane are just darn great and led to what I think will be the quote of the week for me.

After going through the agony of reliving their past, the good and the bad, Josh asks Reva if they want a drink. They clink champaigne glasses and gulp it down only to discover it's ginger ale to which Kim Zimmer delievers "Oh damn. It's ginger ale." with so much dissapointment you almost have to laugh out of sympathy for Reva and Josh you feel so bad for them.

So what is you're quote of the week this week or last? I'd love to read your favorite quotes!

Reva Faces Tough Decision on "Guiding Light"

TV Guide Canda's Nelson Branco has a fresh Nelson Ratings for your enjoyment. Here's a highlight from his latest column.

Reva and Josh’s epic love story is by far my most favourite, which is why I’m so protective of them. It’s also why I wept every time those bitches at GL aired those bittersweet and depressing Reva-Josh wedding flashbacks every three seconds. Why was it so sad? Because it reminded me when GL used to be the best soap opera on the air.

So now our sassy heroine, Reva is faced with the toughest decison daytime TV: Josh or Jeffrey? At the end of the day, I’d have to pick Jeffrey because the man not only loves her but he also respects her. Wasn’t Bradley Cole (Jeffrey) the shining star in this whole revival? Even Reva can’t say she loves Reva as much as Jeffrey does. And dare I say it: Nicole Forester (Cassie) wasn’t bad this week, especially during Cassie and Josh’s couple-therapy sessions. And if you tell anyone I said that, I’ll deny it in a court of law.

Be sure to check out this week's Nelson Ratings for the latest on Guiding Light and all your favorite soaps.
