Murders Most Foul

Hot on the heels of my admittedly scathing review of Friday's ultra-campy, Scooby Doo meets The Munsters inspired episode of All My Children which culminated in the murder of Stuart (Not Adam) Chandler, I finally had the opportunity to catch up with Guiding Light, which had its own less heralded "Who Killed Edmund Winslow?" whodunit kick off.

Since I received a little bit of blow back for my harsh (and well-deserved) criticism of AMC, I'd like to take the opportunity to explain why Springfield's simultaneous murder mystery is infinitely superior to Pine Valley's. READ MORE

It Was a Dark & Stormy Night...

Even if you do not follow literature, you are no doubt aware that the title of this post is a phrase associated with the worst kind of lazy, pedestrian, obvious writing imaginable. "It was a dark and stormy night..." is, to put it bluntly, synonymous with the word "bad."

Bad in and of itself isn't always a bad thing, as there are varying degrees of badness from which to choose. For example, there are things that are "so bad they are good," like The Pussycat Dolls and RuPaul's Drag Race. There are other things that are really bad, like white people dancing to "Push It" and Julie Chen hosting Big Brother. Then you have things that are so atrocious, inspiring more WTF moments than a Samantha Harris post-performance interview on Dancing with the Stars that you question your sanity for sitting through it without clubbing a baby seal.

By "you" I mean "me," and it might not take too much of a stretch of the imagination to guess how I felt about Friday's abominable, lobotomized episode of All My Children that climaxed with the shooting of "a legendary character." READ MORE

ABC Soap Scoop!

Who's tuning in to All My Children for the biggest murder mystery ever?

Pine Cones in Pine Valley

Regular Daytime Confidential readers and aficionados may have noticed that this lovely website has added daily recaps of most of the soaps on the air, in addition to Perkie's longtime (and often hilarious) observations about General Hospital. Conspicuously absent from the recaps — at least as of this writing — has been what might be considered the quintessential forerunner of the modern soap opera, All My Children.

Not too long ago, our fearless leader, Luke, asked if I would be able to write a daily recap of the show since I've been watching it; I regrettably informed him that because of a currently unpredictable schedule (hence, why there are long lags between my posts these days) I would be unable to do so. Instead, I suggested that I would divert my recent attentions from Guiding Light to AMC a bit more closely and blog about life in Pine Valley more regularly. Since then I've mightily tried to get a grip on the show, but unfortunately watching All My Children is not unlike walking on pine cones barefoot: it's not the worst feeling in the world, but it is still pretty painful. Guiding Light Moment: Billy to Mindy: "You're NOT My Daughter!"

Welcome to one of the reasons why I watched Guiding Light. My older sister and I had to take a stroll back in time and relive the moments in our heads about what got us hooked on GL. I remember watching the storyline play out when one of soaps ultimate bad boys Roger Thorpe (the late Michael Zaslow) was hitting the sheets with his enemy Billy's (Jordan Clarke) baby girl, Melinda "Mindy" Sue Lewis played by Kimberley Simms at the time. So what if Roger and Mindy were tearing up a box spring, they are both adults right?

Eenie Meenie Minie Mo Catch a Hunk by the Toe

Amanda Dillon (Chrishell Stause) hasn't been the luckiest in love. Every time she falls for someone something happens. There was Jamie (Justin Bruening), JR, Jonathan (Jeff Branson) and didn't she even try to seduce Aidan (I'm a little fuzzy on those early days of her character)? Well now it seems that Amanda has not one, not two, but three men to choose from.

Sure The Powers That Be are trying to take Ricky Paull Goldin's Jake Martin out of the running and she just slept with David Hayward (Vincent Irizarry) but now it seems as if the writers want to reunite her with JR (Jacob Young).

Personally, I'm not all that thrilled with a David/Amanda coupling but a Jake/Amanda/JR triangle would be smokin hot.

Erica Kane, So Many Men to Choose From

All My Children's Erica (Susan Lucci) has had herself many a man over the years and one can't be too hard on her for it, after all she is Erica Kane. It's not like she's a wannabe diva from another ABC soap, who shall remain nameless for the sake of my hope (read the comments) that Pushing Daisies will be saved and who I must say nice things about for a month if it is, who slept with two men in one episode without a shower in between, but I digress.

Once again, Erica finds herself the center of at least two mens' attention, Adam (David Canary) and Jack (Walt Wiley). With the return of David Hayward (Vincent Irizarry), one can only wonder what might be in store for the former lovers.

Belief vs. Disbelief

Belief & Disbelief

At the risk of indulging an age-old cliché or perhaps inventing a new one, real life is the soap opera that interrupts our daytime dramas.

I've been away for the last couple of weeks caring for my partner who was seriously ill for a little while (all is better now); dealing with the challenges of running a business and maintaining my livelihood in a faltering economy; consoling friends over unexpected loss in their lives and reveling in the result of a Presidential election which has left me elated and joyous in an event that I, as a Black man, never thought I would see in my lifetime. This time has been filled with hospital vigils and prayers (all answered in the affirmative), nail biting suspense, and a dash of personal intrigue. In short, the last two weeks have been a period of belief and disbelief. READ MORE

Gone With the Wind

Babe is Dead

Such a momentous day and so little to say. Before I get to the death of Babe, a couple of quick notes.

First, I really liked the scenes where Natalia told a shell-shocked Angie and Frankie about how Jesse always loved them, but also communicated the amount of love between Jesse, Natalia and her mom. Second, the tornado must have knocked some sense back into Greens because she quickly put together that Zach was the father of Baby Lesbianca. I'm curious where this little tidbit may lead. Third, Jake operated on Kendall when the lights went out in Georgi....I mean, Pine Valley Hospital. Once Taylor restored power to the generator and Kendall's surgery was complete, Kendall went into convulsions, most likely spasms of joy over Alicia Minshew's vacation. Finally, Erica and Adam were rescued by the Scooby Doo gang, setting up fireworks in the Baby Lesbianca saga for Erica and fallout from Babe's death for Adam, which bring us to... READ MORE
