Here's the Scoop! 07.02.08
Let's get the hard stuff over with and out the way... if you've done any digging or had any idea as to where things may be heading, you know I'm talking about Marty and Todd. RUMORS are rampant with a wedding for the rapist and his victim. Crazy, right? Maybe not, as Luke and Laura (GH) had the love story to end all love stories after the rape at the Campus Disco. For the new OLTL viewers, back in their college days, Marty was the victim of a "gang" rape led by Todd Manning. Unlike Laura, Marty pressed charges and a big court trial storyline followed. That rape changed Marty. She became reckless and out of control. Now flash forward to where we are today, Todd is divorcing Blair and feeding Marty his version of her life, will Marty fall in love with Todd? It sure looks like this is the way Ron C. is headed.
What about Cole? It seems that the one time enemies, Cole and Todd, will team up to keep Starr's baby out of the adoption pool. Will Cole go along with Todd's plans for Marty in order to keep his baby? What happens when Marty's memory comes back and she realizes she's fallen for her rapist? It looks like well into August, Marty and Todd are still sharing the screen. As Tina, our DC podcaster put it, Todd and Marty's relationship will be built on a house of cards. When Marty's memory returns (we all know it will) how fast will that house of cards come crumbling down?
Cain as a Prince? RUMORS say Cain will pose as Prince Heinrich. Carlo has plans for Tina and Talia. One is the Princess of Mendorra, the other may become a Princess. Back to Cain, is he nothing but a con man pulling one over on Mendorra? Does Princess Tina know?
We had the unabortion on AMC, will we see an unconception on OLTL? RUMORS say there could be an attempt to stop David's Vicker's conception.
A new family is hitting Llanview. Are they tied to Langston? Hector, Maria and Elena are a colombian family possibly brought in by Clint. He's looking for a way to take Dorian down a notch or two and what better way than to hit her through Langston. Will Carlo know this family? Why is Colombia popping up in the RUMORS? We're hearing that Antonio MAY wind up in jail in the South American country as a way for Antonio to stay away from Talia.
Sarah's going over the falls... will Christian watch? Cord did when Tina went over. How much of this classic storyline will be re-told? Cord fell in love with Kate and it was during their wedding that an alive and well Tina returned.

Frankly, I'm uneasy about this Marty/Todd thing. I've got a lot of respect for Ron C. right now. I don't want it destroyed because he does something so, well, stupid, as to tear down the complexities and severe emotions of Marty's rape s/l. I'm still cautiously optimistic, because Mr. Carlivati does have such strong sense of history, and I tend to think that once this is all out in the open, Marty will have her revenge for all of this. Add in the Cole factor and the baby, and this has the potential of a powerhouse story. We'll just have to see. Rape's a dicey subject on any show, and OLTL needs to tread lightly here.
The big difference that I see with Marty's rape story and Luke and Laura's story is that GH went to lengths to change the tone, for lack of a better word, of what happened at the time to sell Luke and Laura's story, and OLTL never backed down from making it the heinous crime that it was. And maybe that's where my trepidation comes from.
And I'd assume that the stopping David Vickers's conception would be part of Rex and Bo's time travel s/l? Sounds like a lot of fun!

Thanks Beth... yes the unconception is a part of the 1968 story.
All great comments re: the rape s/l and where Ron may be going with this. Tina and I were discussing the differences between Marty's rape and Luke & Laura's story. Yes they are very different, especially in their outcomes. The point of bringing up LL is that it has happened in Soap history. There are definite differences in Marty's case. She prosecuted Todd and the rest of the men who raped her. We're thinking that should they go along with this storyline they way it seems they are going, it will be a build up to Marty's memory returning and everything exploding.

I was so looking forward to the new & improved OLTL...but I gotta tell ya'll- IF Carlivati puts Todd & Marty together in a relationship, regardless of her having no memory of what Todd did to her...I will have to quit watching.
That rape and the horror of it & what Marty went through is still very clear in my memory..and Todd does this to her...he's raping her all over again IMO.
The rest of OLTL sounds good, but this? Just shouldn't happen.

I'm a new OLTL viewer but I'll tune back out if they pursue this. I'm shocked that daytime continues to write rape-love stories. If they want to know why no one is watching soaps anymore this is one clue.

Yep, I think you and Tina are right on the money with this. It does seem to be leading to a pretty explosive conclusion. I think where the show's going to have to be careful is in how long it takes for them to get to that conclusion. If they drag this out, people are going to get turned off from it. But again, I've got confidence in Ron's ability to tell this well, so I'm going to just keep watching and see where things land.

ABC DAYTIME ROCKS!!!
I'm shaking my head in disgust!! How could RC throw Marty and Todd together like this! He's been with OLTL for a long, long time, he should know how Marty fans and longtime OLTL viewers feel about what Todd (along with his 2 other buddies Zach & Powell) did to Marty. How does Susan Haskell feel about this? I hope RC realizes that he is going to get a lot of heat from a lot of longtime viewers if it turns out that Marty & Todd will end up getting married.
If RC wants a quick rewrite, try this, have Marty start getting her memory back, have her toy with Todds head, making him think that she is falling for him, then at the wedding day, before the supposed I do's, have Marty confront Todd about what he has been doing and then Marty kick his a$$ right at the ceremony. This storyline I could see, but if RC has Todd & Marty "fall in love" he is going to lose a lot of respect from fans who have been behind him since he took over the helm of head writer at OLTL!

If this were GH or AMC, I might be a lot more worried about the Todd and Marty storyline than I am. As it is, I tentatively trust Ron C and his writing team. What I see when I turn on my screen isn't romance -- it's a sick man, using a woman he's hurt to try and get leverage against people that he imagines have wronged him. And if there's a wedding, I imagine there will be an agenda behind it. The fact that Todd feels a sense of responsibility and (in his own twisted way) affection for Marty is entirely beside the point -- those are feelings he's held towards her for years. He's risked his lives several times to save hers, and one thing that I love about OLTL is that doing so has never been painted as absolving Todd of his crimes -- I don't think this SL will, either. Todd is using Marty, and when she gets her memory back, he's going to pay for it. I think Ron C has a better sense of the show's history than to honestly have this play out like a love in the afternoon sort of thing.

Also, it would seem a bit OOC to me for Clint to use Langston to get to Dorian. Yes, he hates Dorian, but Clint is a dad, and Langston's a child. It just seems like something that would cross the line -- although, I wouldn't have pegged Clint as the type to try and choke a woman, either!

I guess I'm just puzzled by most people's comments. Yes, Todd and Marty are growing closer---but under Todd's completely diabolical pretenses. I don't think RC and his writers ever intended this to be interpreted as some kind of romance. It's total and complete manipulation on Todd's part. He's telling Marty she never had a child, and John treated her in a terrible way. And on top of that, Todd is painting himself as some kind of golden child who was left by his wife because she was terrible to him. He's also left out that little issue about Todd's gang rape of Marty, "accidental" murder of her college boyfriend, and all the other drama involved with that. In other words....Todd is LYING!!! How is this a premise for romance.
Marty is Todd's victim in his web. I don't understand how anybody sees this as a burgeoning romance, much less along the signs of Luke and Laura. I think the TPTB are presenting this story as this kind of villain/victim scenario, but I keep reading this disturbing stuff about how there is some romance blooming and I can't help but think "the writers and certain members of the audience have a failure to communicate."
I think a Todd/Marty romance would be almost impossible to create in light of their history, but if it were ever to happen, it certainly would not evolve (at least in a palatable way) out of what is currently going on between them. JMHO...
